Safety at a road and rail level crossing

Here are a few simple rules that will aid you in safely crossing the road and rail level crossings.

Rules for safely crossing the railroad tracks

Railroad tracks should only be crossed at established level crossings designated for this purpose.

Upon approaching a level crossing slow down to a speed that will allow the vehicle to come quickly to a stop and look carefully in both directions before beginning to cross, even in the event that the traffic light is not flashing and there is no warning bell heard. It is possible that due to a technical problem the barrier is not functioning properly.

When the traffic light is flashing and/ or the bell is ringing, immediately come to a full stop before the designated line, even if the barrier has not begun to descend.

Wait until the barrier has risen completely and the bell has stopped ringing and the light has ceased to flash. Sometimes the waiting time may be extended. In addition, it is possible that shortly after one train has gone by a second train will pass the crossing.

Drive continuously, without stopping, and avoid changing gears while crossing the tracks.

Report to the supervisor anything that may be dangerous.

Special Points for Two Wheeled Vehicles

Cross
the level crossing slowly and carefully. The wheels can slip on the metal railway tracks. In addition, sometimes the area of level crossing is not even and may have pits and grooves.

Wait until the barrier rises completely before entering the area of the crossing.

Special Points for Pedestrians

Stop and look carefully in both directions
. Remember: the duration of crossing for a pedestrian is relatively long.

Walk only in a straight line, continuously and without stopping while crossing the tracks.

Pay special attention to the passing cars while crossing the tracks. Drivers approaching the crossing are concentrating mainly on the barrier and on crossing over the tracks.

Do not cross the tracks if there is any chance you may be forced to stop while on the tracks (due to physical disability, carrying of baggage or any other reason).

Do not cross the barrier and do not enter the area of the crossing while waiting for a train to pass.

Do not go near the barrier operating device. The barrier rises / descends automatically and may hit anything standing in its path.
